Unboxing & Overview: Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 AM5 Motherboard

The Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 has the unique distinction of being the one and only AMD X870 micro ATX motherboard offering in the AM5 micro ATX motherboard market, at least as of the time of publishing this article.

If you've been looking high and low for a micro ATX motherboard powered by AMD's X870 chipset for your upcoming "Zen 5" AMD Ryzen 9000 series PC build, look no further, for the Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 has just arrived on the scene. First showcased at Computex 2025 in May, this AM5 motherboard has the honour of being the only AMD X870-powered micro ATX motherboard offering that's available to purchase in the market - for some reason, motherboard manufacturers (other than Gigabyte) have thus far opted not to produce any micro ATX AM5 motherboards that are equipped with the AMD X870 chipset.

Sporting compatibility with the current-gen Ryzen 9000 series of processors, as well as the Ryzen 8000 series of APUs and CPUs, and the older Ryzen 7000 series of CPUs, the Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 is likely targeted at end-users intending to build a higher-end AMD AM5 PC, who would like to have integrated USB4 ports on their motherboard - as per AMD's requirements, motherboards with the X870E and X870 chipsets must come with USB4 ports as standard. Packing features such as a 14+2+2 VRM setup, PCIe 5.0 support for a graphics card and a M.2 drive, dual USB4 ports, WIFI 7 support and so on, read on to learn more about this motherboard!

In terms of aesthetics, we see that Gigabyte has gone for a black-coloured PCB and black heatsinks that feature splashes of grey and some touches of mirror finishes. The board comes with an integrated I/O shield design, and over on the rear, we see that Gigabyte’s included some AORUS motifs for added visual interest - a nice touch I must say, in spite of the fact most of these motifs would likely never see the light of day when the board is installed inside of a PC case.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Chipset Heatsink

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ARGB LEDs

The X870 chipset is cooled by a passive heatsink, where fans of integrated aesthetic LEDs for their motherboards will be pleased to note that Gigabyte's also included RGB LEDs beneath the said heatsink. The lighting effects of these LEDs can be configured from within Windows using the Gigabyte Control Center app.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 M.2 Heatsink

For M.2 drive cooling, Gigabyte's included a single rectangular heatsink that provides coverage for the two M.2 drive slots that this board comes with.

VRM & Memory Support

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 VRM

The VRM heatsinks for this board are decently-sized, and Gigabyte's included 14+2+2 power phases with 60A power stages. In case you're wondering, the board utilises a six-layer PCB construction.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Memory Support

The X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 comes with four DDR5 slots that as of the time of publishing this article, supports up to 256GBs of RAM and the DDR5 8200 standard when overclocked, with plastic slots of a single-tab design.

Front Panel USB Headers

In terms of front panel USB connectivity, we get a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C front panel header located right next to the RAM slots.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Front Panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A Header

Near the board's dual SATA III ports is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A front panel header that provides support for up to two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A ports.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Front Panel USB 2.0 Type-A Header

Rounding off this section on front panel USB connectivity is a pair of USB 2.0 Type-A front panel headers, with each header providing support for two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, for a total of four ports.

Expansion Slots & Storage Options

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 PCIe 5.0 x16 Slot

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 PCIe UD Slot X (1)

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 PCIe UD Slot X (2)

The X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 comes with a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for a graphics card – the said slot features Gigabyte’s "PCIe UD Slot X" design that reinforces the slot for use with heavy graphics cards. The slot sure looks premium all right, where we get a rubber inner lining within the slot that I suppose can help protect your graphics card's PCIe "teeth" from damage during installation and removal. We even get a metal backplate on the rear of the PCIe slot for added reinforcement.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 PCIe EZ-Latch Plus

The slot also comes with the PCIe EZ-Latch Plus feature that helps make removing a graphics card from the slot a cinch. Pressing down on the button pictured above will cause the graphics card retention tab to be disengaged, for the easy removal of your installed graphics card.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 PCIe 4.0 x16 Slot

To round things off in the expansion slots department, we get a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot that operates at x4 mode that can be found along the bottom edge of the board.

With that out of the way, it's worth highlighting that PCIe 5.0 is only supported when you have a Ryzen 9000 series or Ryzen 7000 series processor installed – the Ryzen 8000 series of APUs and CPUs only support the PCIe 4.0 standard, and the PCIe 5.0 x16 slot will drop down to operate at Gen 4 speeds when you have a Ryzen 8000 series APU or CPU installed.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 SATA III Ports

Moving on to storage connectivity, the X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 comes with just two SATA III ports. Surprising really, as I was expecting the board to come with at least four SATA III ports, which is the "standard" number of SATA III ports that one tends to get with mainstream and premium motherboard offerings.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 M.2 Slots

For M.2. slots, the board comes with a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot and a PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot. Do note that both these slots support NVMe SSDs only, M.2 SATA drives will not work in any of these slots. Once again, a reminder that PCIe 5.0 is only supported when one has a Ryzen 9000 series or Ryzen 7000 series processor installed – the Ryzen 8000 series of APUs and CPUs only support the PCIe 4.0 standard.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 M.2 EZ-Latch Click

We’ve got two quality-of-life features with the M.2 slots. First up, the included M.2 heatsink features a tool-less design called M.2 EZ-Latch Click, which makes removing and reinstalling the heatsink really easy.

M.2 EZ-Latch Plus

M.2 EZ-Latch Plus on the other hand, is a M.2 drive retention tab design that makes installing and removing a M.2 drive a tool-less affair.

Audio & Internet Connectivity

Other Features

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Multikey Button

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Power Button

Some interesting features that the board comes with – back at the top of the motherboard, we get a reset button, also termed a multi key button by Gigabyte, which can be reprogrammed from within the BIOS to serve other purposes. We do also get a power button that allows you to power up your PC - this should come in handy especially when troubleshooting PC start-up issues.

Status LEDs

On the topic of troubleshooting PC start-up issues, we get a set of debug LEDs that can help with this very exercise.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Sensor Panel Link (1)

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Sensor Panel Link (2)

A key special feature of the board is Sensor Panel Link, which allows end-users to install a small LCD display screen (also termed a sensor panel in some quarters) as part of one’s PC case, where the said screen can be used to display vital PC statistics, static images or even videos of one's choice. This screen would be hooked up to a HDMI 1.4 port that can be found along the edge of the X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7, where the said port supports a maximum display output resolution of 1920x1080@30 Hz.

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 TPM Header

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Reset Header

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Clear CMOS Header

Moving over to the bottom edge of the board, we get a TPM header for an optional discrete Gigabyte TPM module, a traditional two-pin reset header that you can hook up to a reset switch, as well as a clear CMOS header.

Rear I/O

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Rear IO

The X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 comes with an integrated I/O shield design, where the I/O shield comes with parallelogram-shaped ventilation openings. The following ports can be found on the rear I/O:

  • Clear CMOS button
  • Q-Flash Plus button
  • 4x USB 2.0 Type-A ports
  • 4x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports
  • 1x HDMI 2.1 port (supports a maximum display resolution of 4096x2160 at 60 Hz)
  • 2x USB4 Type-C ports (both ports support DisplayPort Alt mode, with support for a maximum display resolution of up to 3840x2160 at 240 Hz)
  • 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port
  • 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports
  • WIFI antenna connector (WIFI EZ-Plug)
  • Audio jack connectors

The Q-Flash Plus feature allows end-users to update the motherboard's BIOS without needing to install a processor, RAM and graphics card - this feature will come in handy especially since it's very likely that AMD's next-generation "Zen 6" processors will be compatible with this board with just a BIOS update, that is, when "Zen 6" launches in the distant future.

Conclusion

Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7

To sum things up, if you’re looking to build an AMD AM5 PC in the microATX form factor and require integrated high-speed USB4 connectivity for your devices, the Gigabyte X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 is pretty much the only board in the market that fits the bill. It’s worth mentioning that there are similarly-specced AMD B850 motherboards in the microATX form factor which, by having the B850 chipset, does away with the USB4 controller, but in return, you get say, dual PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slots instead, like with the Gigabyte B850M AORUS PRO WIFI7 that I wrote about some weeks back – that board has very similar specs to the X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 in this article. Ultimately, which board to choose will really boil down to your personal requirements for your PC build.

The above aside, from a specifications perspective, the board comes with a pretty good set of features for a somewhat high-end motherboard offering, where it comes equipped with a VRM setup that should handle the entirety of AMD’s AM5 processor line-up with ease, PCIe 5.0 support for both a graphics card and a M.2 drive, 2.5Gbit Ethernet with built-in WIFI 7, a good assortment of USB Type-C and Type-A connectivity options, along with a bunch of interesting and helpful features such as Sensor Panel Link, EZ-Latch Plus and so on.

Some downsides to mention, the board does use a WIFI 7 module that doesn’t support the full 320MHz channel width that you tend to get with higher-end WIFI 7 modules. This is something to take note of, especially if fast WIFI 7 networking is one of your key considerations. Also, I was kind of surprised to see only two SATA III ports with this board, though if you’re not intending to install that many SATA drives in your PC build with this board, this would be a moot point.

As of end-October 2025, the X870M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 is available to purchase in Singapore for a price of around $435 Singapore dollars from local PC hardware retailers. For you international readers, Amazon and Newegg do not currently have this board listed for sale yet - hopefully in due course, it'll make its way into widespread availability around the globe.
