Review: ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7800 XT White OC Edition 16GB GDDR6 Graphics Card

ASUS's take on a white-coloured Radeon RX 7800 XT graphics card is aesthetically pleasing with good thermal performance to boot.

AMD's mid-range RDNA 3 GPUs have been on the market for some time now, with parts such as the mid-range Radeon RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT duking it out with Team Green's product offerings, namely the original GeForce RTX 4070 (non-SUPER) and most recently, the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER. Especially with the price cuts that AMD has made to the RX 7800 XT in order to maintain price competitiveness against NVIDIA's RTX 4000 SUPER series of GPU offerings, there's no better time than now to consider Team Red's GPU offerings if you're in the market for a new mid-range graphics card.

For this article, ALKtech unboxes and tests what could very well be THE mid-range AMD graphics card to get for those intending to build a white-themed PC: the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7800 XT White OC Edition 16GB GDDR6. Sporting a sleek white-coloured aesthetic with a hefty aluminum fan shroud and backplate, read on to see how this card performs with a mix of gaming benchmark tests at the 1440p resolution, when paired with a mid-range processor, the Intel Core i5-12600K, as part of a white-themed test-bench PC build.

ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7800 XT White OC Edition 16GB GDDR6 Aesthetics (Front)

Unsurprisingly, the Radeon RX 7800 XT White OC Edition shares the same design language as the rest of its TUF Gaming graphics card brethren, NVIDIA's cards included. This is because graphics cards in the TUF Gaming line-up utilise a "vented exoskeleton" comprising of a hefty aluminium shroud and backplate, which gives the TUF Gaming graphics card line-up a unique military-inspired aesthetic. The card is well-built and comes with premium features, such as three "axial-tech" fans with dual ball bearings for better airflow, which only spin up when GPU temperatures go above 55°C so as to keep noise output levels to a minimum, a 2.96-slot design, premium 20K military-grade capacitors and so on.

Along the long edge of the card is a Performance/Quiet mode switch that allows end-users to toggle between two BIOS profiles so as to suit their usage scenarios - the Quiet Mode, as its name implies, implements a less aggressive fan curve to help keep fan noise at bay.

ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7800 XT White OC Edition 16GB GDDR6 Power Connector

As can be seen, the TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7800 XT White OC Edition utilises two 8-pin power connectors to supply its power needs - this is in contrast to NVIDIA's mid-range offerings that have made the switch to the 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector.

Ambient Temperature of Surroundings: ~30°C

While on the Performance mode and under gaming workloads, I found the Radeon RX 7800 XT White OC Edition's fans to be pretty quiet. That said, I could detect quite a fair bit of coil whine in the form of a low buzzing noise that was especially evident with the side panel of the PC case removed - with the case fully enclosed however, the coil whine for the most part was masked by the general fan noise of the test bench PC.
