Packaging & Contents
The MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI comes in a colourful box with an image of the motherboard splashed across the front, and we get the usual summary of specs for the board over on the rear.
The board comes with the following accessories:
- MSI WIFI EZ Antenna
- 1x SATA III cable
- 1x EZ Front Panel cable
- 1x addressable RGB extension cable
- 1x 1-to-3 EZ Conn-Cable V2
- 3x M.2 drive screws
- Quick installation guide
- Regulatory information leaflet
- Sheet of MSI decorative stickers
- MSI survey leaflet
Visuals on the above accessories can be found in the review video for this motherboard, which is embedded at the top of this article. That said, the 1-to-3 EZ-Conn cable forms part of a new MSI specific-feature called EZ Conn, which allows end-users to connect an addressable RGB device, a fan and a USB device to a single proprietary EZ Conn header on the motherboard - MSI's intention here is to simplify the hardware setup process, and I'll give a more in-depth description on EZ Conn later in this article.
Board Aesthetics
In terms of aesthetics, MSI's gone for a silver-and-white colour scheme, with a white PCB, silver coloured heatsinks and black hardware connectors. Fans of RGB lighting effects might want to take note that the MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI does not come with any onboard RGB LEDs, though it does still come with a single Gen 2 addressable RGB header.
The rear of the motherboard is coloured in grey, and we also get protective paint around the motherboard’s screw holes to protect the PCB against scratches during installation, which is a nice touch.
The B850 comes as a single-chip design, and the said chip sit beneath the active heatsink pictured above that also doubles up as the heatsink for the board's PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 drive slot.
VRM & Memory Support
The VRM heatsink for this board is decently-sized, and popping it off reveals the 8+2+1 power phases with 80A power stages that MSI's included.
For memory support, the board comes with two DDR5 slots that sport a single-tab design - as of the time of writing this article, the MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI supports a maximum of 128GBs of RAM and the DDR5 8200 standard.
Front Panel USB Headers
For front panel USB connectivity, MSI's included a USB 10Gbps Type-C front panel header as well as a USB 5Gbps Type-A front panel header. The said USB 5Gbps header provides support for up to two USB 5Gbps Type-A ports.
We do also get a single USB 2.0 front panel header right above the board's PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, where the said header provides support for two front panel USB 2.0 Type-A ports.
Expansion Slots & Storage Options
As a motherboard in the ITX form factor, no surprises here that the MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI comes with just a single PCIe 5.0 x16 expansion slot for a graphics card – the said slot sports MSI’s Steel Armour design to reinforce the slot for use with heavy graphics cards.
For those who are unaware, it's important to note that PCIe 5.0 is only supported when one has a Ryzen 9000 series or Ryzen 7000 series processor installed – the Ryzen 8000 series of APUs only support the PCIe 4.0 standard. With a Ryzen 8000 APU installed on this board, the PCIe x16 slot will run at either PCIe 4.0 x8 or x4 mode, depending on which model of Ryzen 8000 APU that you have installed.
Moving on to storage connectivity, MSI's included two SATA III ports near the board's 24-pin power supply connector.
The board also comes with two M.2 slots, with one being a PCIe 5.0 x4 slot located on the front of the motherboard, and the other a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot located on the rear of the board. As can be seen from the photos above, the Gen 5 M.2 slot is cooled by an active heatsink that is held in place by two screws. Once again, PCIe 5.0 is only supported when one has a Ryzen 9000 series or Ryzen 7000 series processor installed – the Ryzen 8000 series of APUs only support the PCIe 4.0 standard.
Due to space constraints, both M.2 slots do not support M.2 drives with built-in heatsinks. In addition, both slots come with support for NVMe M.2 drives only - M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
Audio & Internet Connectivity
Powering the MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI's audio is a premium Realtek ALC4080 audio codec...
...while for internet connectivity, we get a 5 Gigabit Ethernet controller in the form of Realtek's RTL8126, as well as a Qualcomm QCNCM865 WIFI 7 module. The said WIFI 7 module supports the "full-fat" 320 MHz channel width and also serves up Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.
Fan & RGB Headers
The MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI comes with three fan headers:
- 1x CPU_FAN1
- 1x PUMP_SYS1
- 1x SYS_FAN1
Also included is a single Gen 2 addressable RGB header.
Other Features
Kicking off this section on special features is a set of EZ Debug LEDs found above the board's processor socket, which can help with troubleshooting PC start-up issues.
Next up on the list is EZ Conn - as mentioned earlier, EZ Conn (JAF_2) is a new MSI-specific connector, and it allows end-users to easily connect MSI’s next-generation AIO CPU coolers or cooling fans to the motherboard with just one on-board connector.
For end-users who do not have such a MSI AIO CPU cooler or fan, the EZ-Conn header can still be used with non-MSI devices via the included 1-to-3 EZ-Conn cable that comes included with the motherboard - as can be seen from the photos above, the EZ-Conn Cable (V2) comes with an addressable RGB connector, a USB 2.0 connector and a 4-pin fan header.
Rounding off this section on special features, we get a Chassis Intrusion header (JCI1) and a Safe Boot Jumper (JOCFS1) to the left of the board's PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot. When enabled, the Safe Boot jumper forces the system to boot with default BIOS settings and a lower PCIe link speed from the CPU.
Rear I/O
The MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI comes with an integrated I/O shield design, where the board comes with the following rear I/O ports:
- Flash BIOS button
- Clear CMOS button
- 1x HDMI 2.1 port (supports up to 8K resolution at 60 Hz)
- 2x USB 5Gbps Type-A ports
- 3x USB 10Gbps Type-A ports
- 1x USB 20Gbps Type-C port
- 5 Gigabit Ethernet port
- MSI WIFI EZ Antenna connectors
- Audio jack connectors
The Flash BIOS feature allows end-users to update the motherboard's BIOS without needing to install a processor, RAM and graphics card.
Conclusion
With that, the MSI MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI is targeted at PC hardware enthusiasts looking to build a higher-end AMD AM5 PC in the ITX form factor and in white, where it occupies a space somewhere in between the mainstream and premium segment. The board sports a VRM setup that should handle high-end Ryzen 9000 processors with ease, PCIe 5.0 support for both a graphics card and a M.2 drives, 5 Gigabit Ethernet with built-in WIFI 7, a nice array of USB Type-C and Type-A connectivity options, and a pretty clean looking aesthetic that in my opinion, rounds off a balanced feature set for a motherboard in this product class. If I were to nitpick, I do wish that this board had come with a properly full-white aesthetic with white hardware connectors - this would have been the proverbial cherry on top of the icing.
As of the time of writing this article, MSI has indicated that the MPG B850I EDGE TI WIFI will go on sale from the 3rd quarter of 2025 onwards.
