DDR4 Memory

Witnessing the launch of a new AMD AM4 motherboard in 2026, 10 years on since AM4 first debuted back in 2016, probably wasn't on a PC DIY enthusiast's bingo card. However, given how PC hardware prices (especially where DDR5 memory is concerned) have skyrocketed, extending the lifespan of a socket such as AM4, which utilises slightly cheaper DDR4 memory, could make some sense after all.

Board Aesthetics

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Aesthetics (Front)

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Integrated IO Shield

On to the board itself, Gigabyte has gone with a black-coloured PCB and grey heatsinks that feature touches of silver for some visual interest. The board also comes with an integrated I/O shield design, where the blue "EAGLE" wordmark lends a touch of pop. Do note that as the board doesn’t belong to me, I wasn’t able to remove the protective plastic film shown above on the I/O shield shroud.

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Aesthetics (Rear)

One mildly surprising inclusion here is the presence of a metal backplate, which is not something I was expecting from a more entry-level EAGLE series motherboard, let alone an AM4 offering at that. Do note as well that the board itself doesn't come with built-in RGB lighting accents, though ARGB headers are present for those of you who intend to add your own RGB bling.

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Chipset Heatsink

The AMD B550 chipset sits beneath a rectangular passive heatsink as pictured above...

M.2 Heatsink

...while heatsink coverage for M.2 drives is limited to just the board's lone PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot.

VRM & Memory Support

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E VRM

For power delivery, Gigabyte's equipped the B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E with 8+2 power phases with 60A DrMOS power stages. On paper, that should allow the board to handle high-end AM4 processors reasonably well.

Do note that the board supports Ryzen 5000, 4000 and 3000 processors only - owners of older Ryzen 1000 and 2000 CPUs will need to look elsewhere if they're looking for a replacement AM4 motherboard.

Memory Support

Memory support is by way of four DDR4 slots with dual-tabbed slots, where the board features support for up to 128GB of RAM and the DDR4 3200 standard; I’m sure you could probably get away with say, DDR4 3600 memory modules on this board.

Front Panel USB Headers

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Front Panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Front Panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A

In terms of front panel USB connectivity, the board comes with a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C header that's situated along the bottom edge, alongside a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A header that supports up to two front panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports.

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Front Panel USB 2.0 Type-A

Also included are two USB 2.0 front panel headers, with each header supporting up to two USB 2.0 Type-A ports. Taken together, that gives you support for four front panel USB 2.0 ports.

Expansion Slots & Storage Options

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E PCIe 4.0 x16 Slot

For your expansion slot needs, the B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E comes with a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot for a graphics card, along with four full-length PCIe 3.0 x16 slots that all run at x1 mode. The unusually generous number of x1 slots makes this board an attractive candidate for PC builds that require multiple add-on PCIe cards.

There's a compatibility caveat worth noting here - PCIe 4.0 support is available only when the board is paired with Ryzen 5000 or Ryzen 3000 non-G processors. If you're intending to use a Ryzen 5000G, 4000G, or 3000G series processor with this board, the primary graphics card slot will run at PCIe 3.0 x16 speeds instead.

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E SATA Ports (1)

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E SATA Ports (2)

Storage-wise, Gigabyte's included four SATA III ports, with two positioned near the 24-pin ATX power connector and another two further down the board in a right-angled arrangement, so as to help with cable management.

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E M.2 Slots

For your M.2 drives, the board serves up a single PCIe 4.0 x4 slot and one PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. If you intend to use a M.2 SATA drive for your build with this motherboard, do note that only the PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot comes with support for M.2 SATA drives.

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E M.2 EZ-Latch Click

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E M.2 EZ-Latch Plus

The PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot also comes with Gigabyte’s M.2 EZ-Latch Click and M.2 EZ-Latch Plus features, making both heatsink removal and M.2 drive installation respectively a tool-less affair.

As with the primary graphics slot, PCIe 4.0 is only supported when you have a Ryzen 5000 or Ryzen 3000 non-G processor installed.

Audio & Internet Connectivity

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Audio Codec

For audio, Gigabyte's opted for an entry-level Realtek ALC897 audio codec, a fairly standard choice for a board positioned toward the more budget-friendly end of the market.

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Ethernet Controller

Wired networking is care of a Realtek RTL8125D controller that provides support for 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, while wireless connectivity is powered by a MediaTek MT7902 WiFi 6E module that comes withwith Bluetooth 5.3 support. These give the board a more up-to-date networking feature set than what many older AM4 boards originally launched with.

Fan & RGB Headers

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Fan Headers

The board comes with no shortage of fan headers, six of them to be precise:

  • 1x CPU_FAN
  • 1x CPU_OPT
  • 3x SYS_FAN
  • 1x FAN_PUMP

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E RGB Headers

On the RGB lighting front, Gigabyte's included three Gen 2 addressable RGB headers as well as a single 12V RGB header.

Rear I/O

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E Rear IO

The B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E comes with an integrated I/O shield design, where the I/O shield comes with square-shaped ventilation openings. The following ports can be found on the rear I/O:

  • 4x USB 2.0 Type-A ports
  • 1x HDMI 2.1 port (supports a maximum display resolution of 4096x2160 at 60 Hz)
  • 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port
  • 1x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port
  • Q-Flash Plus button
  • 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port
  • 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports
  • WIFI antenna connector (WIFI EZ-Plug)
  • Audio jack connectors

The Q-Flash Plus feature allows end-users to update the motherboard's BIOS without needing to install a processor, RAM and graphics card - clearly a feature that's in a nod to AMD's propensity to release new AM4 processors, in spite of the socket being rather long in the tooth now.

Conclusion & Pricing

Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E

As unusual as it may seem to see a new AM4 motherboard launch in 2026, the Gigabyte B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E does make practical sense in current market conditions, given that it does serve up a modernised feature set such as 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, WIFI 6E support, front and rear USB Type-C connectivity, and so on. If DDR5 memory pricing still puts newer platforms such as AMD's AM5 or Intel's LGA1851 out of reach for you, a board like this gives you access to more current features while allowing you to stay on DDR4 - this would be especially helpful if you're in a situation where your AM4 motherboard's just conked out, and you're unwilling to shell out the cash needed to move to a DDR5 platform.

In terms of pricing, the B550 X EAGLE WIFI6E is available to purchase from Amazon for around US$192, while in Singapore, the board is available to purchase for a price of around $269 Singapore dollars.
